Howard our pick for Assembly

For an out-of-town representative, incumbent 28th District State Assemblyman Simon Salinas has made an effort to stay connected in Gilroy – which is more than we can say for many past elected state and even county public servants.

But it’s not enough to deter us from recommending Gilroyan Jane Howard to unseat Salinas.

Howard has a near-impossible task: the Democrats have gerrymandered our once-cohesive Assembly district into a mish-mash area designed only for Democratic self-preservation. That doesn’t dissuade us.

As she has on Gilroy’s School Board and in the community, Howard will be a competent, fair and hard-working leader. She touts herself as a “common sense” candidate and, while that might sound trite to some, she has repeatedly demonstrated that she is just that.

Clearly, Howard will not only pay attention to the Gilroy region’s needs, she will work hard to make things happen on a state level in key areas like transportation.

Moreover, what separates her from Salinas is her fiscal conservativism. In a time when the state faces huge budget challenges, Howard won’t rubber stamp huge expenditures along party lines. She’ll use common sense. Howard for Assembly.
