On Wednesday March 19, The Dispatch printed several opinions from fellow Gilroyans regarding President Bush’s war on Iraq. Most of the people quoted replied in typical Gilroy conservatism fashion. Only one stood out in my mind and shocked me.
The 18 year-old San Jose State University student basically stated that because Bush’s war was inevitable, she would support it. It terrifies me that someone of my generation would feel this way. Death is inevitable. We all know this, but we don’t lie down and wait for it to happen. We continue each day living and working, and learn to deal with aging and fight disease.
Government-sanctioned murder, a.k.a. war, is not something that should be accepted just because it is inevitable. As Americans it is our responsibility not to cop-out and accept something as horrendous as war just because it is inevitable or because someone else says so. We should question the motives for any war and decide for ourselves if we should support it or not.
