Gilroy – On a rainy holiday weekend, three people were injured in separate crashes.

The wet weather contributed to a single car crash Thursday, on U.S. 101, according to the California Highway Patrol. Julie Renee Van Doren, 43, of Gilroy, was driving a 1999 Ford northbound on the freeway at an unsafe speed in heavy rain at about 10:30pm, the CHP said.

She lost control and struck the hillside on the right side of the freeway, coming to rest on the driver’s side. Passenger Carlos O’Hara, 52, of Morgan Hill, suffered a major cut to the back of his head, and a facial laceration. He was taken to Santa Clara Valley Medical Center.

• A San Jose man suffered minor injuries after he drove off Day Road east of Watsonville Road and struck a tree at about 3am Thursday. David Dale Ray Carasco, 23, was driving a 1989 Dodge westbound when he struck the tree. He was taken to Saint Louise Regional Hospital.

• On New Year’s Day, two cars crashed at Buena Vista Avenue and No Name Uno at about 8:45pm after Mario Reyes, 20, of Gilroy, driving a 1989 Nissan, failed to stop at a stop sign. Reyes’ car struck a 1992 Pontiac, driven by Pedro Marquez. Marquez was taken to Saint Louise.
