For the Gilroy High girls’ basketball team, the formula for success wasn’t all that complex in its 68-53 victory at North Salinas Tuesday night.

“We passed the ball around well,” GHS head coach Keri Williams said, “and we either got it into Jessica (Groppe), who put herself in a good position, or we kicked it to the weak side for Katherine (Hussey), who hit a bunch of open shots.”

It was as simple as that really.

Groppe and Hussey scored 22 of the team’s first 25 points and combined for 30 points in the first half as Gilroy surged to a 39-24 lead. In the second half, the margin grew as big as 25 for the Mustangs, winners of six in a row.

Gilroy (13-6), which was coming off Friday’s thrilling win at Hollister, is now 2-0 in TCAL for the first time in Williams’s three-year coaching tenure.

“That’s a lot better than 0-2,” said Williams, referring to her team’s slow start last season.

“After a big, emotional win, I’m just glad we didn’t flop,” she added. “We didn’t play our best game, and yet we still ended up with 68 points. So I guess that’s pretty good.”

With 20 points, Hussey led the team in scoring for the third straight game. Groppe, who has racked up a combined 28 first-half points in Gilroy’s two league wins, finished with 18 against the Vikings (10-6/1-1).

Senior guard Shanté Mancera added 11 for Gilroy, which now readies for a key home game against TCAL power Notre Dame on Thursday night.
