The Gilroy High wrestlers didn’t win every match against Salinas Wednesday night.

They did, after all, have to forfeit one.

Otherwise, though, it was sheer domination for the host Mustangs, who dusted off the Cowboys, 67-5.

Salinas didn’t bring a few of its top wrestlers, so GHS decided before the competition to rest most of its varsity squad.

Not as if that presented much of a problem. The ‘Stangs won all 11 matches that were contested.

Junior varsity wrestlers Travis Sakamoto (119), Chris Krough (125), Ethan Ogle (130), Ismael Gutierrez (140) and Seth Whitney (189) stepped it up a level and all came away with easy victories.

Assistant coach Greg Varela, who said he was especially impressed with Krough’s win over Mario San Boto, was more than happy to see some of his JV wrestlers get a chance at varsity victories.

“I was glad to see it,” he said. “Some guys that might not otherwise have that opportunity got some good work in.”

Tim Ibanez (152), Joseph Delgado (152), Mike Ayers (160), Luis Albarron (171), Andres Barragan (215) and Luis Chavez (275) also posted victories against the Cowboys.

At this weekend’s tournament at Overfelt High, all varsity wrestlers except Nicolo Naranjo, Adin Dueñas and Armando Gonzalez will be competing.

The full team will be back in action at the Mid-Cals Jan. 28-29, when Gilroy hosts over 40 schools at its annual tournament.
