Gilroy – A local organization is offering free drug and alcohol prevention workshops to parents and teens in Gilroy, Morgan Hill and South San Jose through a program called Families That Care.
The classes, presented by Community Solutions, are intended to help parents and teens take a proactive approach in preparing for the peer pressures and changes that accompany adolescence, said Erin O’Brien, CEO of Community Solutions.
“So many programs center on treatment and intervention, but Families That Care is a proactive program designed to help parents prepare for the coming pressures and changes associated with adolescence,” she said.
According to the Gilroy Police Department, the Criminal Justice Statistics Center reported that drug-related felonies and misdemeanors are highest among teens ages 15 to 17, while 12- to 13-year-olds and older teens have significant arrest numbers for marijuana.
A central part of the workshop is a patented, five-step class called Refusal Skills, which, as the name suggests, teaches teens how to say no to damaging behaviors.
In the third session of the workshop, children ages 8 to 14 share with their parents the material they learned in Refusal Skills.
The classes will be available in English and Spanish, and childcare will be provided for children ages 3 and older.
Parents who complete the program will receive a $25 gift certificate to Wal-Mart.
Topics in the classes include how to improve family communications, develop healthy beliefs and establish clear standards for children.
Strategies will be presented to help parents assist their children in saying no to drugs and other problematic behaviors, as well as increasing children’s involvement in their families.
Community Solutions is located in Gilroy at 6980 Chestnut St. The organization also has three locations in Morgan Hill.
