Cheating at Gilroy High troubling

The following organizations and individuals deserve either
CHEERS or JEERS this week:
JEERS: For the students at Gilroy High who are using their cell
phones and skirts to cheat on tests. Besides gaining the obvious
advantage over other students who are working to achieve grades,
the cheaters are compromising every student’s privilege to carry a
cell phone on campus.
The following organizations and individuals deserve either CHEERS or JEERS this week:

JEERS: For the students at Gilroy High who are using their cell phones and skirts to cheat on tests. Besides gaining the obvious advantage over other students who are working to achieve grades, the cheaters are compromising every student’s privilege to carry a cell phone on campus. One student said he only cheats when he knows he’s going to fail. Wonderful justification. What happened to showing up for class, listening, studying and getting help if you need it?

CHEERS: For the new rural crime deputy, Doug Vander Esch, who has been doing all the right things since taking over the position. Getting to know the farmers and ranchers in South Valley is key to the position, and Vander Esch has been out all month meeting and greeting people. Rural crime is a growing business, but efforts like this from the Santa Clara County Sheriffs Department go a long way toward prevention.

JEERS: For those who don’t pull over, don’t stop or otherwise do something silly when emergency vehicles are speeding to their destinations. The best move is to pull over to the right with caution and wait for the emergency responders to pass.

CHEERS: For the passing of “the worst day of the year” – Monday, Jan. 24. Whew! A British psychologist pieced together numerous facts to come up with an equation, including debt and days since celebrating the holidays. Anyway, we’re glad it’s over, and besides, April 15 gets our vote.

JEERS: For the San Jose City Council which, come hell or high water, is bent on approving the development plans for Coyote Valley. The fast-forward launch into the plan and the continued arrogance shown regarding the impacts of the development remain astounding.

CHEERS: For the MidCal Wrestling tournament at Gilroy High this weekend. For kids and adults it’s always a treat to watch the fast action on the mat. The finals should start around 5:30pm Saturday and some of the state’s best wrestlers are here. Check it out at the GHS gym.
