Los Gatos – Call it a flair for the dramatic, call it a big-time statement, call it the biggest hit for the Mustangs so far this season.
Whatever you call Joe Cano’s three-run shot in the top of the eighth to put Gilroy up 6-3 against St. Ignatius, the guy who hit it isn’t calling it any of those things. He’s calling it a sacrifice fly that got away.
“I was just trying to hit it deep to move the runners over,” the senior said. “Then it went over the fence.”
The Mustangs, winless on the season going into Saturday’s Los Gatos Tourney game with the Wildcats in Los Gatos, had a 3-2 lead going into the bottom of the sixth. That’s when St. Ignatius got a run across to tie the score.
In the top of the 7th, Gilroy’s Peter Mickartz hit a one-out double but catcher Chris Hernandez hit a grounder to shortstop that caught Mickartz in a pickle. Hernandez was doubled up at first on the play.
In their half of the inning, the Wildcats put a runner on second, but Carlos Garcia got a strikeout to end the inning.
After Cano’s homer, St. Ignatius scored once more for a final score of 6-4.
