Gilroy – Today is the last day to turn in submissions for the Gilroy Garlic Festival Association entries for the 2005 Art Poster Contest.
A $750 first prize will go to the entry which is judged to best capture the spirit and essence of this premier food festival. In addition, the first place winner shall receive ten posters and one of each souvenir item produced with their artwork. The second place winner will receive $400 and third place $200. The winning entry will be reproduced as a high quality, limited edition poster to be sold at the 27th Annual Gilroy Garlic Festival, July 29, 30 and 31.
The deadline for entries is 5pm today and winners will be notified by March 31.
Entry forms and complete contest rules are now available from the Gilroy Garlic Festival office, 7473 Monterey St.
Flower lovers meet Wednesday
Morgan Hill – Morgan Hill Flower Loves’ Club, including Gilroy and San Martin, will hold its monthly meeting Wednesday, March 2 at noon in the Morgan Hill Community and Cultural Center, 17000 Monterey Road.
Demonstration of oil paintings by artist Mary Hiller, who served as director of Gallery Morgan Hill for two terms, will be featured.
Dual language info night Thursday
Gilroy – Dual Language Immersion Program Informational meetings in English are from 9 to 10am or 6 to 7pm, Thursday, March 3. Meetings conducted in Spanish are from 7 to 8pm, Thursday, March 3, or from 9 to 10am, Friday, March 4. Classes take place at Las Animas School, 8450 Wren Ave., Room 8.
Childcare will be offered at the evening meeting.
Enjoy ‘An Evening of Mexican Music’
Gilroy – The South Valley Symphony is pleased to sponsor an upcoming concert with the Mariachi Santa Cecilia ensemble in a program, consisting of Mexican music to be held at St. Mary’s Church, Saturday at 8pm.
Comprised of 12 musicians, the group has previously appeared with the orchestra, but this time will be featured separately, performing traditional Mexican music. They are well known throughout the central coast area, performing regularly at the Berryessa Flea Market on weekends, as well as many other venues.
Due to the requirements of two generous grants received, one from the Calpine Gilroy Energy Center, and the other from the Raymond Family Foundation, the South Valley Symphony is able to present this concert at a reduced price of $5 per ticket.

Prepare for FAA pilot exam at Gavilan
Gilroy – A fast-paced class designed for those considering seeking a pilot’s license or currently taking flight training to be prepared to take the written portion of the FAA Private Pilot Exam.
This course is required to obtain your private pilot’s license. It will be held Tuesday, March 15 and Thursday, March 17, from 6 to 9pm at Gavilan College Room CJ500. Cost: $120
