Kudos for president who’s aiming for real ‘social security’

Dear Editor,

This is a brief note to encourage all readers to support President Bush’s Social-Security-privatization plan.

The inherent problem with the pyramid scheme (a.k.a. Social Security) is that the government runs it. About 35 years ago, the big-hearted, rob-Peter-to-pay-Paul Democrats in Congress let the “trust” fund be tapped to lessen the deficit. It has been raided ever since! They also decided to let people – farmers and immigrants – who never paid thereinto collect benefits therefrom!

The government has proven time and time again it cannot be trusted. The list of broken promises is endless. There was a movement in 1993 (when the Democrats had both houses) to tax our 401ks; I remember our then (so-called) representative, Zoe Lofgren (D-San Jose) calling them “untapped reserves” (her exact words).

The president’s proposal is to allow people the option of putting two percentage points, which is about one-quarter of the take, into private investment. This is so excellent, and long overdue! It will lessen government’s control over the system, still offering a “safety net” while encouraging private-sector investment. Another huge bravo for President Bush!
