Caller 1: Hi, we were just calling about the wrestling for the Gilroy Mustangs on KSBW 8 and KICU where they have the sports focus, that Hunter Collins, a freshman wrestler at Gilroy High School was Athlete of the Week for his CCS performance. He also went to Bakersfield to compete for the State Championships and took an eighth at 160 lbs. He is the youngest state medalist ever in the state of California to place at any level. So we’re hoping to see some really good coverage of this. We also know that Armando Gonzalez took a third and Adin Dueñas did well, as did Nico Naranjo. We took sixth in the state and this should be recognized.

Green Phone: Thanks for informing us about Collins’ accolades on the local television stations, Caller 1. He deserves them, as do all four of the Mustang medalists, and a fifth qualifier, Austin Gubrud, at last weekend’s State Wrestling Championships. Gilroy head coach Armando Gonzalez has really created a wrestling program to be proud of. We were speaking with former GHS wrestling coach Chuck Ogle before the tournament, and he said, “Armando has really taken it to a new level,” regarding coach Gonzalez’s program. Now those of you who remember some of the great Mustang wrestlers Ogle coached may agree with us that Chuck Ogle is far too humble about his own accomplishments. But the point is that coach Gonzalez’s love of wrestling and commitment to working with wrestlers at all age levels is really paying off for us fans.

Caller 2: I’m calling about the wrestling this weekend. We sent five boys down to the state meet, we medaled four, the first time ever in Gilroy history. I sincerely hope that there will be some real coverage for them. We were down in Bakersfield watching the State Championships and the Bakersfield newspaper had a four-page section covering wrestling. We should have gotten something like that done for the boys when they did win CCS. Now you guys need to make up for it and give them some real coverage for State. There should at least be a page on each of the boys. California State is considered the toughest tournament in the nation. So please don’t let the newspaper come out with a blurb, because we’ve been suffering through some bad wrestling coverage all year long. And could somebody please explain to me, what was the 8×10 picture of a kid from Porterville doing in the middle of the wrestling section on Friday? I mean come on!

Green Phone: Caller 2, you called back a few days later with a friendlier call, so we don’t want to make too big of a fuss about your points. We do want to say, though, that the choice to run the picture of the Porterville wrestler, alone in a hallway and crying after a loss, was made because we felt it illustrated, in a way no amount of words could, the sense of the emotional stakes at the State Championship. Not everybody was able to go to Bakersfield for the tournament, but we think that picture really helped to show how tough that tournament really is, as you rightly describe it.

Caller 3: Have you guys forgotten that we have boys’ volleyball at the high school going on right now? I have yet to see a mention of it. We’ve already had a preseason away game and a scrimmage last week. Today we play against Mt. Madonna, which is a big preseason game.

Green Phone: Boy, it’s out of the frying pan and into the fire for the ol’ Green Phone this week, isn’t it? Beef up the wrestling coverage and get pilloried for failing the boys’ volleyball team! Seriously, Caller 3, we don’t mean to kid you – thanks for bringing the boys’ early season exploits to our attention. The Mustangs went on to pull out a five-game win against Mt. Madonna – the first win in the program’s history against that particular opponent – which we reported in Wednesday’s paper. We’ll be keeping everybody up to date on the volleyball season as it progresses. The boys’ next game is against Harbor in Santa Cruz on Monday and they’ll square off against the Haybalers in Hollister next Wednesday. Keep your eyes on our scoreboard on B2 for the results and schedules of all Gilroy High spring sports.

Caller 2 (a couple days later): I wanted to thank you guys for doing a really good job on the article concerning the wrestlers, and have a good season.

Green Phone: Thanks, Caller 2. We hope you also had a chance to see our weekend coverage of the State Wrestling Championship at www.gilroydispatch.com. Interested readers can see even more pictures of the tournament in the Sports section of the Web site. Oh, and Caller 2, thanks for the sentiment, but we don’t have seasons here at the Green Phone. We’re a 365-day-a-year operation … the hardest-working automated voice messaging system in show business. The little Green Phones need a roof over their dial pads, so we can’t afford to take a break.
