Hollister – The Gilroy High baseball team is feeling pretty good about itself following a 4-2 win over the Haybalers in Hollister on Friday, the Mustangs’ second win over San Benito High in a week.

“Any time you play guys like this, you know it’s going to be tough, said Gilroy head coach Clint Wheeler of his Hollister opponents. “You just hope that the ball goes your way and you come out on top.”

It looked like things were going Hollister’s way early on. The Haybalers got out of a jam in the first inning when starting pitcher Breyon Canez struck out Gilroy’s Joe Cano to retire the side with Peter Mickartz, who got on with a double to start things off for the Mustangs, stranded on third.

The ‘Balers also started the game with a nice bit of offense as Scott Mead, leading off the game for Hollister, unloaded on Gilroy starter Carlos Garcia’s 1-1 offering for a solo homer over the fence in left center.

The Mustangs got out of the first without further injury and went to work on the Haybaler defense. Marc Gonzales, with one out in the top of the second, reached first on an error. Hollister catcher Seth Hudson threw Gonzales out at second on an attempted steal and Canez struck out Josh Sterling to get out of the inning. But the error was a harbinger of things to come for the Haybalers, who wound up committing six in the game.

Gilroy got some offense in the fourth helped by poor Hollister defense to tie the score at 1-1. Chris Hernandez singled and then stole second to move into scoring position with Gonzales at the plate. The senior hit a shot to third base. The ‘Balers racked up another error on the play and Hernandez made it home, Gonzales to second.

Hollister missed out on an opportunity to bring across a run of its own in the fourth as Geno Fata reached third base with two outs on a solid hit to right to field, only to be left stranded as a pop fly ended the San Benito half of the inning. The Mustangs continued to capitalize on the Haybalers’ mistakes in the fifth. Marty Sustaita, working with two outs on the board, hit a shot between first and second, good enough for a single, to start the inning. Drew Anderson then reached second after a routine bouncer into the infield turned into another Haybaler error that allowed Sustaita to get to third. Peter Mickartz brought Sustaita home when he took Canez’s 1-0 pitch into shallow right.

The Haybalers’ Kris Bittner didn’t fare much better against the Mustang hitters as he walked the first two batters he faced, the second bringing Anderson across for a 3-1 lead.

The Mustangs added another run in the seventh. Mickartz, who reached first by virtue of a walk from Hollister’s Doug Conte, scored when Conte walked Hernandez with the bases loaded, extending Gilroy’s lead to 4-2.

Carlos Garcia started for Gilroy, going three innings. Jeremy Teschera came on in relief, pitching the fourth and picking up the win. Peter Mickartz pitched three innings to close out the game.
