Gilroy – For the next three Wednesdays, Gilroy residents can participate in a workshop about improving and maintaining quality neighborhoods.

On Wednesday, representatives from the city, Gilroy Police Department and Fire Department will present information about safe neighborhoods and homes, from keeping blight out of sight to ensuring safety in case of a fire.

Light refreshments will be provided, and those who attend all three workshops will receive a certificate of recognition from Mayor Al Pinheiro.

The workshops are in the Gilroy Senior Center, 7371 Hanna St., from 5:45 to 7:30pm.

Man injured in crash near Casa de Fruta

Gilroy – A motorcyclist suffered a broken leg when he collided with a car while entering Casa de Fruta Parkway Saturday morning.

Joel Diaz, 28, of Chowchilla, had pulled his motorcycle to the side of the road. A Fresno man driving a car was turning onto the road when Diaz pulled out in front of him, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The car struck the right side of the motorcycle, breaking Diaz’s right leg. Diaz was ejected from the bike as it fell over, and suffered lacerations to his face.

He was transported by ambulance to Saint Louise Regional Hospital.

Rollover off a 10th Street freeway exit

Gilroy – A 20-year-old Gilroy man who was exiting southbound U.S. Highway 101 at 10th Street Sunday night veered left across the offramp and rolled down a grass embankment, overturning once.

Brandon Parrish’s 2000 Jeep came to rest in an open grass section between the offramp and onramp just north of 10th Street, according to the California Highway Patrol, but Parrish suffered only minor injuries. He was transported by ambulance to Saint Louise Regional Hospital, where he was treated and released.

Las Animas ‘Fresh Choice’ Fundraiser

Gilroy – Las Animas School is holding a fundraising night at “Fresh Choice” on Thursday, between 4 and 9pm.

Fresh Choice will donate 20 percent of sales back to the Home & School Club. Pick up a flyer at Las Animas’ office and present it to the cashier when you pay. Fresh Choice is located by the Outlets across from Office Max.

PFLAG meets Saturday in Gilroy

Gilroy – PFLAG (Parents, Families, and Friends of Lesbians and Gays) is a support group fostering understanding and acceptance in families and society.

The monthly meetings are held every third Saturday, 9:30am at The United Church of Gilroy, corner of Fourth and Church streets.

Auditions slated for ‘Aladdin Jr.’

Gilroy – South Valley Civic Theatre will be holding auditions for Disney’s “Aladdin Jr.” at the SVCT, 8565 Monterey Road (behind Kelly Moore Paints) on Friday, with 6:30pm check-in for 7pm auditions; and Saturday, with 9:30am check-in for 10am auditions and 12:30pm check-in for 1pm auditions.

Call backs at the director’s request will be held Saturday evening.

All roles are open for youth actors ages 8 through 14. Jafar may be cast as an older baritone role up to age 18.

Please come prepared with a song of your choosing not from Disney’s Aladdin.

An accompanist will be provided. All roles should be prepared to perform a cold reading and dress comfortably for a short dance routine.

Enjoy vintage cornet, harmonica music

Gilroy – United Methodist Church, 7600 Church St., will host a musical concert on Friday, March 18 at 7:30pm. American vintage cornet music and hand harmonica will be performed by Herman Schmalzried and accompanied by Eunice Coates.

Concert waltzes on the piano will be featured by Candace Fazzio. Admission is free. Freewill offering to benefit the California Retired Teachers Association Scholarship Fund.

Downtown flea market kicks off in April

Gilroy – The 2005 downtown Gilroy Flea Market, at the Lewis Street parking lot, will be held from 8:30am to 3pm on the third Saturday of each month, April through October, except in July when it will be on the fourth Saturday.

Spaces 9-feet-wide by 20-feet-deep are available for $20 per space.

Set up will be from 7 to 8:30am the day of the event. Vendors must supply their own chairs, tables, umbrellas, etc., and are responsible for trash cleanup of their space.

Breathe easy at Better Breathers Club

Gilroy – Saint Louise Regional Hospital, 9400 No Name Uno, will host a Better Breathers Club Meeting featuring “Respiratory Therapy” in the boardroom on Thursday, starting at 11:30am.

Respiratory Therapist Susan Riddell will speak on inhalers, breathing techniques and breathing exercises.

The event is free, but spaced is limited so reservations are required.
