Gilroy – Despite leaving some runners stranded on the bases, the Gilroy girls’ softball team came up with a 2-0 win over San Lorenzo Valley Wednesday afternoon.

“I would have liked to score more runs,” said Gilroy coach Julie Berggren.

“We left a lot of runners on base and in scoring position. But all in all, it was a great game and I’m pleased with another victory.”

Mustang ace Sarah Villar (4-2) fanned six batters and allowed only two hits in the shutout.

The ‘Stangs, now 6-2 overall before entering league play, scored both runs in the third. Kayla Aldridge led off that inning with a single and was moved ahead by a sacrifice from Yolanda Esquivel. After Erin Magill milked a walk, Aldridge scored on a passed ball for Gilroy’s first run.

That brought Brittney Balanesi up to the plate. Balanesi connected for a triple, which brought Magill home to make it 2-0 Mustangs.

“Defensively, we played very well,” said Gilroy coach Julie Berggren. “We had a great effort by our outfielders.”

One of those great efforts was made by center fielder Lauren Chris, who made a highlight reel catch to preserve the shutout.

Next on the Gilroy softball agenda are Saratoga and Valley Christian, whom the Mustangs will play Friday in the 32-team Circle of Champions tournament in Sunnyvale.
