Caller 1: Hello, I’m wondering why the Gavilan College softball team does not have a home run fence or a scoreboard and the boys do? Even the high school has the correct facilities and Gavilan College is lacking in that. I’d like to know why and is there is a Title IX equality and I was wondering what we could do about it?

Green Phone: Caller 1, we’re planning on doing a pretty big story covering your questions about Title IX and also an investigation into Gavilan softball coach Tim Kenworthy’s contention (published in our Letters section recently) that he is not being re-hired by Gavilan due to his opinions on Title IX discrepancies at the college. Look for that story in this section next week.

Caller 2: Hello, I’d like to know, when is Gavilan College going to fix their facilities out there, port-a-potty wise? Where are you supposed to wash your hands? Seems like that would be a health hazard.

Green Phone: Caller 2, when we were covering the softball team’s 9-7 victory over Chabot Wednesday evening, we have to confess we were wondering the exact same thing. We asked a knowledgeable fellow at the game what the story was and he said the City of Gilroy, as part of its deal with Gavilan to use the field for recreational softball, had agreed to both help maintain the field and install permanent restrooms. Clearly, this hasn’t happened yet. We’ll be investigating what the problem is on this issue and inform you as soon as we know.

Caller 3: I’m just calling about boys’ volleyball, letting you guys know that the ’98 team also beat Mt. Madonna in three games. I was a member of the coaching staff. That team also went on to earn a 6th seed in the CCS playoffs and lose in the quarterfinals, just in case you wanted to compare them to the new team. That’s all.

Green Phone: Caller 3, thanks for filling us in on the facts. We apologize for reporting that the boys hadn’t beat Mt. Madonna before. We certainly don’t want to take away from the accomplishments of the ’98 team.
