Former major league baseball player Chuck McElroy and his partner Derrick Conde came from Texas to educate young baseball players in Gilroy recently at a training camp sponsored by West Coast Pirates.

Activities were structured with basic fundamental stretches to avoid injury in the future. McElroy and Conde are just two in a team of professional and college players associated with Chuck McElroy’s MVP Baseball/Softball Academy in Dickinson, Tex. The organization was contacted by Robert and Nancy Fernandez to help better young area athletes.

On Saturday, the participants were instructed in baserunning, fundamental stretching and warm-ups, throwing and batting. On Sunday, the athletes worked on fielding and hitting along with tips for proper conditioning. On Monday, players worked on the infield and outfield positions and pitchers worked on pick-off techniques and mound presence. The camp finished Tuesday with an overview of what had been learned.
