Dear Editor,

On behalf of the Santa Clara County Library, I would like to thank the Gilroy Chamber of Commerce for hosting a televised forum on Library Measures A and B that will be on the May 3, 2005 special election mail ballot.

And, special thanks to the Gilroy Chamber of Commerce and the Gilroy City Council for their endorsements. Those who missed tuning in will have an opportunity to do so before ballots are mailed on April 4. Measure A will replace the current tax assessment with a special tax in the same amount, $33.66 annually. Measure B will increase the annual special tax $12 each year and restore Monday hours and funding for books at the Gilroy Library and eight other libraries in the system; special tax dollars collected in Gilroy will fund only Gilroy Library operations.

The Santa Clara County Library has been nationally recognized as number one for four consecutive years for its collections, programs, services and efficient operation. Fines and fees were increased by the JPA in 2004 but only account for 3 percent of the overall costs; adult literacy and bookmobile services along with children’s story-time programs are funded by local tax dollars.

Public libraries have historically been funded with public monies so that all residents have equal opportunity to become informed citizens. Staffs of the Santa Clara County Library and particularly the Gilroy Library are proud to be a part of the Gilroy community and look forward to continuing to serve each and every Gilroy resident.

Melinda Cervantes,

County Librarian, Santa Clara County Library
