Gilroy – Think there’s nothing to do in Gilroy? Think again.
Throughout the month of April, the Gaslight Theater will be hosting “Friday Night Live,” an entertainment night for area youth.
Rap, hip hop, rock, dance, country, comedy – you name it, Gaslight has it.
“What we’re advertising to do is have a night life for youth that is drug and alcohol free,” said Reverend Tony Fleege, pastor of Global Harvest Bible Church. “It’s not a religious service – there won’t be a prayer session – it’s just a positive environment for youth,” he said.
Gaslight opens its doors April 8 for the cause. In May, Fleege will take over the lease to build a place where local youth can just go to relax and hang out in a positive environment.
“Gaslight is a nice place that has a lot of potential. But right now it’s a bar,” Fleege said. “I want it to have more of a positive influence.”
His vision includes a coffeehouse, video games, and live entertainment – a place where kids who have nowhere to go on Friday nights, can visit.
But it’s not just for kids. Fleege and area ministries are trying to work together to bring college-age students out who don’t necessarily want to rely on the bar scene to provide their entertainment.
Friday Night Live is cheaper than seeing a movie, and lasts longer.
Currently there are three confirmed acts for the April 8 show, but Fleege is looking for more talent. Musicians, poets, actors, comedians all are welcome. So if you think you have what it takes to perform, come down, Fleege said.
Friday Night Live will run April 8, 15, 22 and 29 at the Gaslight Theater, 7430 Monterey Road, Gilroy. Doors open at 7pm. Cover charge is $8.
