The path to college for Sarah Mariscal has not always been straight or without hills to climb.

At the beginning of her freshman year, Mariscal moved from San Jose to Gilroy. The transition from a city environment was difficult.

“The first couple of years I could have done better. It doesn’t really hit you until sophomore year (the importance of doing well),” Mariscal said. “Freshman year it’s still new,” she said.

During her sophomore year she became depressed and began cutting herself to relieve the tension.

“I knew better,” Mariscal said. “I felt there was no help.”

Eventually, Mariscal found solace in God and by participating in her church youth ministry. In meetings with other teens, she shared her testimony and found comfort in telling her story.

“God is always there,” she said. “And He forgives you.”

Junior year, her Cal–SOAP counselor, Jason Barros, helped her realize her potential. She starting taking advantage of the tutoring program Cal–SOAP offers.

“I had to actually study. I had to stop winging it,” she said. “With math, I totally struggled. Before I got D’s. Now, B’s.”

However, last year, her English teacher Kristin Porter taught her to appreciate writing.

“She helped me put my heart in it,” Mariscal said.

This summer, she will participate in the Summerbridge program at Gavilan College. Mariscal intends to complete her general education requirements at Gavilan College in one year and then transfer to Evergreen Valley College to receive her nursing degree.
