There is an alternative to BART and strongarm tactics of Ron Gonzales

Dear Editor,
With San Jose Mayor Ron Gonzales preparing to strong-arm county
voters into taxing themselves again for BART, it’s important for
them to know that they have other choices.

Alternatives to BART exist – San Jose can be linked to Fremont by conventional commuter trains, and Milpitas and east San Jose can be connected to downtown with a short light rail extension.

Measure A funds could easily cover the cost of these alternatives, with money left over for things that matter to South County residents, like improved CalTrain service.

Leaders of under-represented cities like Gilroy can take an active role in this debate. If Gonzales and the VTA want to put a sales tax measure on the ballot, why not put up one of your own – authorizing the use of existing funds for more affordable transit projects.
