George F. Johnston died peacefully Monday, May 23, 2005 surrounded by his family at Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital.
Born Feb. 25, 1914, Mr. Johnston lived in Salinas since 1982.
Mr. Johnston served in W.W.II and the Korean Conflict and retired after 37 years with the State of California Department of Corrections where he worked most recently as Associate Warden at the Tehachapi Correctional Institute. He served on the Board of Education for the Tehachapi school district, president of the Golden Hills Golf Course and Homeowners Association, and was a member of the Elk’s Lodge and American Legion.
His hobbies included playing golf and spending time with his family.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Evelyn Johnston; daughters, Judy (Larry) Hazen of Gilroy and Mardi (Tom) Knapp of Watsonville; grandchildren, Tiffany Hazen, Lori Cardoza, Larry Hazen, Ken Knapp, Tracy Jones and Vance and Mark White; and nine great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 11am Saturday, June 18 at Struve and LaPorte Funeral Chapel, 41 W. San Luis St., Salinas. There will be a reception at the Salinas Elks Lodge on Airport Boulevard following the service.
