Richard “Dick” Nicholls died Wednesday, June 15, 2005 at Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital. He was 60.
Although he was born and raised in Morgan Hill, he made Gilroy his home for nearly 30 years. He graduated from Live Oak High School and San Jose State University and was a Navy Veteran of the Vietnam War.
He began his career as a buyer for Macy’s and Ford’s Department stores in Watsonville.
In 1978 he became the Marketing Director for Falcon Cable TV. He began his association with the Gilroy Garlic Festival as the promotions chairperson and subsequently a board member, becoming its executive director in 1985.
He was Past President, Member and Paul Harris Fellow of the Gilroy Rotary Club. His affiliations include Founding President and Past Director of the California Festival Association; Past President and Director of the International Festivals and Events Association and was named to their Hall of Fame in 1996.
Locally he served as a past director for the Gilroy Foundation, United Way and as coach for the Gilroy Parks and Recreation Basketball league.
He leaves behind his wife Brigitte and sons Jerrod and Justin of Salinas. He was the son of Lillian Nicholls and the late James Nicholls of Morgan Hill and brother to Linda Leimas of Morgan Hill and Debbie Orr of Paradise. He was uncle to Scott Leimas, Shelley Darman, Emily Walker and Mitchell Orr.
Funeral services will be held at 10am Saturday, June 25, 2005 at the Gilroy Presbyterian Church, 6000 Miller Ave., Gilroy, under the direction of the Habing Family Funeral Home.
Burial will follow at Gavilan Hills Memorial Park in Gilroy.
