Sign-up for National Jr. Basketball

Final sign-ups for Gilroy/Morgan HIll National Jr. Basketball (NJB) league will be held Oct. 8 & 9 from 10am to noon in the Sears parking lot at 835 1st St. in GIlroy. Gilroy/Morgan HIll NJB is open to all boys and girls in grades 3-10. Call 846-6306 for additional information.

Gilroy Brown season in full swing

The Gilroy Brown football season is well on the way with the fourth game of the season verse the Sunnyvale and Santa Cruz teams this past weekend.

The Gilroy Mighty Mite worked their way to a 24-24 tie against the santa Cruz Seals. The Mighty Nite scored touchdowns on their first three offensive possessions vs. the Santa Cruz Seals.

Brandon Boyd scored the first touchdown on a 50-yard run. Ruben Resendiz scored the second touchdown on a 50-yard run and Kenyon Williams scored the third touchdown on a 55-yard run.

Brandon Boyd later scored the fourth touchdown on another 50-yard run. All of these touchdowns were the result of great teamwork by good blocking and everyone playing hard. Jacob Moen also had a 50-yard run that ended at the 4-yard line as time ran out for the first half.

The defense was led by an aggressive defensive line and hard-hitting linebackers. Nose Tackle John Martinez made sure no one ran up the middle.

The linebackers, Kenny Dipko, Brandon Boyd, Austen Hammerstrom, Jacob Moen and Cody Oberlander made some great hard-hitting tackles.

The Santa Cruz Seals scored four touchdowns running wide sweeps and reverses.

The Junior Pee-Wee squad, hungry for there first win, defeated the Sunnyvale Micro Rockets 19-0. The Pee Wee squad received the ball first and drove down the field with the running of Alex Gutierrez and Ryan Alba. Nathaniel Silva scored on a 2-yard run.

On the second possession it came down to 4th and 15 on the Sunnyvale 40- yard line. Brandon Pickens dropped back and threw a 20-yard pass connecting with Collin Minyard and he out ran defenders for a touchdown.

In the second half the game was put away with great running by Alex Gutierrez, Ryan Alba and Travis Franco.

Alex Gutierrez scored on a 2-yard run.

The defense applied much pressure and had several sacks by the front four Jacob Campos, Isaiah Campos, Rayshon Mills, and Richard Martinez. The linebacker, Defensive ends, Corners lead by Colton Britton did a great job not allowing Sunnyvale a score.

The Peewee squad continued their winning ways by outlasting the Sunnyvale Black Knights to a 12-6 victory. Both defenses held tough with no score until right before halftime when Joseph Lara connected with Julius Travis on a swing pass to the left side, and with some fancy moves and 29 yards later Gilroy had ther first score.
