Its extremely discouraging to read that not only have SAT scores
gone down in Gilroy, as student numbers rise, the number of
students taking the SAT declined.

Currently we allocate more than $50 billion dollars for the California public school system. We have been throwing money at education for the last 30 years, yet we fail to see that money is not the issue here at all.
What is at issue is that teachers are not teaching well any longer as a whole. We all know there are stellar teachers who are raising the bar and inspiring and challenging students. But if we ask our own kids, they will be the first to admit that there are teachers that are making no difference in their lives. They are not teaching well, and so our kids float through their classes, until you see how it culminates. They score low on their SAT’s, or worse, don’t take the SAT and decide to try and make a future without a college education.
Which brings me to Gov. Schwarzenegger’s Teacher Tenure Initiative. The Santa Clara County Board of Education supports Proposition 74.
Prop 74 makes great sense. We all say teachers are the most important, it’s all for the kids, we’ve all heard it before. Yet, we continue to allow teachers to be guaranteed a job for the next 30 years, after just two years. TWO YEARS! If this is not the height of mediocrity, I don’t know what is.
Looks to me that by dumbing down and watering down our teacher standards, we are now seeing the fruits of our carelessness in these low SAT scores.
Just like a bad piece of fruit in a fruit bowl spreads its disease to the rest of the fruit, a bad teacher that cannot be removed will infect the enthusiasm and dedication of the best teachers that are around them. This is why we need to support higher standards for our teachers, and our kids. This is why we must vote YES on Prop 74.
