Dear Editor,

On Saturday, the Hurricane Relief Concert at Christmas Hill Park filled the sunny afternoon with music for over six hours. Classique Inc. put together a wonderful mix of local bands and Las Vegas-style impersonators for the toe tappin’, funny bone extravaganza.

“Tina Turner” had male audience members on stage with their pants rolled up and revving their motors to the rockin’ beat. The Blues Brothers had the dance floor full to capacity and everyone else laughing or clapping or cheering with their more than adequate rendition of James Belushi and Dan Akroyd. The multi-talented emcee sang and joked and then renamed us the “Penmanship Capital of the World” because he couldn’t read the writing on any of the raffle tickets. It was a great, great day of fun.

Southwest Airlines flew all of the entertainers here for free. Forest Park Inn gave them room and board. The city donated the amphitheater. Local newspapers advertised. Red Cross volunteers helped St. Louise Volunteers sell tickets, run raffles, set up and tear down food booths and fences.

The only thing missing? Customers. I was there for about three hours and, even with some people coming and going, I’m going to estimate that only about 300 tickets were sold during that time.

I’m rarely disappointed in South County’s community spirit – but I was on Saturday. The music and entertainers were so excellent and the cause couldn’t have been better. I feel badly that so many folks missed the fun, but I’m triply disappointed when I guess how small the donation totals were.

I know many of us have already sent an individual check for the victims of Katrina, but this is a chance to send relief in behalf of our community. So, if you didn’t get a chance to attend the concerts and would like to donate to this community effort, please mail your gift to St. Louise Regional Hospital Foundation. Vivian Smith said they’ll include any mailed or hand delivered donations in the Hurricane Relief Check. (In the memo line, write for Katrina concert fundraiser.)
