Gavilan College Equity Week
Gilroy – Gavilan College’s adjunct, or part-time, faculty will be honored by various college departments for their contributions during Campus Equity Week which begins Monday and ends Friday.
The week’s activities are funded through a grant from the National Education Association and the Gavilan College Faculty Association.
There are almost 200 adjunct faculty at Gavilan and less than 75 full-time faculty. Adjunct faculty teach an estimated 54 percent of Gavilan classes, according to a Gavilan College press release.
Adjunct professors have the same qualifications, either a master’s degree or above, as required of full-time faculty.
Among the activities planned for next week are: a dinner with the administration of justice faculty, a dinner meeting in the social science department, a social for athletic department faculty, and a tea for librarians and online adjunct faculty.
During Campus Equity Week, there will be coordinated activities on campuses throughout the U.S., Canada and Mexico. Campus Equity Week has been held annually since 2001.
A coalition of faculty activists, locals, major federations and professional associations, including the American Federation of Teachers, National Education Association, American Association of University Professors and National Writers Union have come together to sponsor CEW.
