Christmas in the Studio

Los Gatos – South County artists Marilynn Host of San Martin and Gilroy’s community librarian Lani Yoshimura will be among artists participating in Christmas in the Studio 2005, an annual group art show and sale.

The show will be held at the Los Gatos History Club building, 123 Los Gatos Blvd. Dates are: Thursday, Nov. 10, 4 to 9pm; Friday, Nov. 11, 10am to 7pm; and Saturday, Nov. 12, 10am to 5pm.

Featured will be pottery, clothing and textiles, ornaments, jewelry and other fine arts and crafts. Proceeds from the sale of specially-made cat theme items will go to Silicon Valley Friends of Ferals.

The Meet the Artist Reception is on Thursday, Nov. 10, 6 to 9pm. Admission is free and the event is open to the public.

Light refreshments will be served and door prizes made by the artists will be given throughout the show.

Relief Concert

Gilroy – A Hurricane Katrina Relief Concert will be held Friday, Nov. 4, at 7pm at Saint Mary Church.

Soprano Lara Bruckmann has appeared with West Bay Opera, San Francisco Choral Society, Arlington-Belmont Chorale, Colorado Lyric Theater, Pforzheimer Opera, Head Royce School Music Department and Diego Rivera Theater.

Ms. Bruckmann has appeared many times at San francisco’s Plush Room and San Francisco Fringe Festival. Her next opera appearance will be as Minnie Belle in Oakland Opera Theater’s production of Kurt Weill’s Johnny Johnson.

Oboist Kyle Bruckmann (Lara’s brother) returned to San Francisco recently after a successful stint in Chicago, where he appeared with Rockford Symphony Orchestra and the punk band Lozenge. Here on the Bay Area, he is a part of Quinteto Latino and sdSound.

Gilroy – Branch 28 of the Italian Catholic Federation presents it’s semi-annual Scholarship Breakfast on Sunday, Nov. 6. Breakfast will be served 7:30 to 11:30am at Cullen Hall, St. Mary Church, 11 First St.

Tough Health Help

Gilroy – Gilroy Presbyterian Church Health Ministries invites the public to a workshop led by church member and attorney Ken McDonald, who will answer your questions about the Advance Health Care Directive that replaces the older methods of making medical care decisions. he will assist everyone who wants one to complete the form. The workshop will be held Nov. 6 at 10:30am in the adult education room at the church. There is no charge, but reservations are required.

Big Quake Coming

Gilroy – Gilroy will be offering two workshops on disaster preparedness from 6pm to 8 pm, Nov. 9; and from 6:30pm to 8:30 pm, Nov. 16.

Discussion will include information on which disasters are most likely to affect the area and what they can do to deal with problems after a disaster occurs.

The program will include the viewing of a new video entitled, “Condition Red: Prepare for Disaster.” The video is a wake-up call for families and individuals who have no plan for how they will deal with a disaster in their immediate surroundings.

Morgan Hill – The Uvas Valley Chapter of California Retired Teachers Association will meet for their annual fall luncheon Nov. 10 at noon at Marie Callender’s Restaurant in Morgan Hill. An agent from a travel agency will explain how to pack for trips..

Curt Parker, legislative representative from CRTA Division 29 in Seaside will speak about the current political situation in California as it affects retired teachers.
