Gilroy – After getting off to a quick start in the first quarter against No. 5 seed Stevenson Tuesday in the TCAL Boys’ Water Polo Tournament, sixth-seeded Gilroy just couldn’t keep up the pace.

The Mustangs held RLS in check for a quarter, tying the game at 3-3 after the opening period, but eventually fell 14-5 in the first round of tournament play.

Gilroy plays Monterey today at 4:30pm at Live Oak in the sixth-place game.

“We came out playing really tough…but we just couldn’t put them away,” said Gilroy head coach Tom Clark.

In the second quarter, RLS scored three goals while shutting out the ‘Stangs. The Pirates held a 6-3 lead at the half. In the final two quarters, Gilroy was on the wrong end of a 9-2 run.

“They had been doing some things I had wanted them to do all year,” Clark said. “They just ran out of gas.”

Gilroy had a well-balanced scoring attack, with Mitch Barnett, Scott Castruita, Austin Gubrud, Daniel Shields and Sam Whitaker all scoring goals.
