Gilroy Needs to Defeat Salinas Tonight if it Hopes to Keep
Playoff Hopes Alive
Gilroy – It’s very simple.
If Gilroy beats Salinas tonight at the Pit, the Mustangs still have a chance to finish the season with a 6-4 record, which would definitely get them into the playoffs. If the ‘Stangs lose, they’ll be a toss-up for the postseason at 5-5.
“Our playoff lives hang in the balance,” aid Gilroy head coach Darren Yafai.
The ‘Stangs (4-4, 1-2) and Cowboys (5-2-1, 2-1) kickoff at 7:30pm tonight in Salinas.
Yafai freely admits that his team is the underdog. Then again, that’s how the Cowboys came into the matchup last year at Mustang Stadium. And what resulted was a 32-8 Salinas upset of the Mustangs.
“Now they’re in the driver’s seat,” Yafai said. “It’s a role-reversal from last year.”
Salinas is coming off a 17-13 home victory over San Benito which the Cowboys won on a long touchdown pass in the final minutes of the game.
Gilroy has the potential to beat Salinas, a team which Yafai calls “the spitting image of San Benito.”
