One minute into the season, the lights went out on the Gilroy boys’ soccer team.
A power outage that affected a large chunk of Gilroy shortly before 6pm Thursday night forced the ‘Stangs to cancel the rest of their season opener at home against Harbor.
“We decided to cancel the game, unfortunately, said Gilroy head coach Armando Padilla. “The guys were so pumped for the season to start.”
Padilla said there had been about two changes of possession when he heard an explosion. The lights at Garcia-Elder Sports Complex then went out on the players on the field and the 60 to 70 people in the stands.
When Gilroy assistant coach Brian Hall made a call to PG and E and found out the power wouldn’t be back for at least an hour, the teams decided to cancel the rest of the game.
A make-up date has yet to be determined.
