Donate a pie to for the Lord’s Table feast
Gilroy – The Lord’s Table is getting ready to feed up to 250 people at its Thanksgiving Day feast. Pies are needed for dessert. Homemade or storebought pies can be dropped off at the St. Mary School Gym, 11 First St. in Gilroy, on Wednesday from 3 to 6pm.

First Marian Filice Youth Piano Competition
Gilroy – Pianists between the ages of 8 and 18 are invited to participate in the First Marian Filice Youth Piano Competition Jan. 14 at the Gavilan College Theater.
Players will be divided into three age groups. Division 1 will be 8- to 10-year-olds. Each player will be allocated 10 minutes play time. Division 2 will be made up of 11- to 13-year-olds and Division 3, 14- to 18-year-olds. Players in divisions 2 and 3 will have 15 minutes to perform.
At the end of every audition, finalists will be named and will compete during the evening portion of the competition.
Each division will be rewarded cash prizes for first, second and third place winners. The Division 1 first place student will receive $200, second place $100 and third place, $50. Division 2 first place student will win $300 second place, $200 and third place, $100. Division 3 first place winner will take home $500 second place, $300 and third place $200.
Each contestant must prepare two contrasting pieces from classical repertoire including Baroque, Classical, Romantic and Contemporary time periods. Memorization is required and one original copy of the music must be supplied for the judges on the day of the competition.
The competition in named after Marian Filice, who was an active member in the Gilroy community who taught piano and supported the arts. The deadline for entry is Dec. 15. Memorial Day committee needs volunteers
Gilroy – The Gilroy Memorial Day Committee is looking for volunteers to help put this annual event together. If you are interested, the first meeting for the 2006 event is scheduled for 6pm Tuesday, Dec. 6 in the upstairs meeting room at Happy Dog Pizza on Fifth Street.

Join in the Christmas spirit at St. Mary School
Gilroy – Come and get in the Christmas spirit at the annual St. Mary School Christmas Boutique from 9am to 7pm Saturday, Dec. 3.
Browse the handcrafts, jewelry, Christmas decorations, art work and clothing items. There will be 35 vendors selling goods at St. Mary School, Cullen Hall, 7900 Church St. Enjoy music, food, beverages, along with a benefit drawing.
Elks Memorial Service honors deceased
Gilroy – The Gilroy Elks Lodge #1567 will be holding their annual
Elks Memorial Service in memory of their departed members Sunday, Dec. 4, at 1 pm.
Elks members gather to cherish the memory of their departed members. They invite all Elks and the widows and family members to join them. Following the service, Phil Robb and the Gilroy High School Chamber Singers will help us begin the Christmas season by performing our favorite Christmas songs.
They also will be serving lunch for $10.. The event takes place at the Elks Lodge, 2765 Hecker Pass Highway. Please RSVP by Friday Dec. 2.
Gav’s Monday Playreading Series begins Dec. 5
Gilroy – Gavilan College Theater Arts department presents the first Monday Playreading Series: Anna in the Tropics by Nilo Cruz.
Anna in the Tropics is a beautifully poetic play that parallels Tolstoy’s Anna Karenina. Cruz, a relative unknown, won the 2003 American Theatre Critics/Steinberg New Play Award for Anna in the Tropics. The award was presented to Cruz at the Humana Festival of New American Plays in April. Two days later, the play won the Pulitzer Prize.
The free event will be Dec. 5, at 6:30pm at Gavilan College Theater, 5055 Santa Teresa Blvd.
