Gilroy – West Catholic League basketball is known for having tough defense. That’s why Gilroy head boys basketball coach Bud Ogden scheduled three non-league games with teams from that league.

In Gilroy’s home opener Tuesday night with Bellarmine, the Bells’ full-court pressure didn’t disappoint and propelled the San Jose school to a 65-46 win over the Mustangs.

“We got a lesson in defense tonight,” said Ogden after the game.

In the loss, senior guard Jeremy Teschera was the only Mustang that scored in double figures with 11. Senior forward Ryan Chisolm added eight and 6-foot-8 sophomore center Jason Conrad had six in his much-anticipated varsity debut.

At halftime, the ‘Stangs (0-1) only trailed the Bells 30-24. But in the first minute and a half of the third quarter, Bellarmine capitalized on two Gilroy turnovers and scored six unanswered points to take 12-point 38-26 lead.

The ‘Stangs never quite recovered and struggled to limit Bellarmine’s second chances on offense. The Bells scored on their last four possessions of the third quarter to take a 54-34 lead going into the final stanza.

“We kind of preach fundamentals,” Ogden said. “I was disappointed at our lack of blocking out, closing out, help side defense. That all seemed to go out the window tonight.”

Teschera said halftime hurt the Mustangs’ momentum. Gilroy played it’s best basketball during the second quarter, getting within four of Bellarmine on several occasions.

“Unfortunately, it took us too long to go to work (in the third quarter),” Teschera said. “We need to pick up our game intensity and have more intensity in practice.”

Out of the gate, Bellarmine outscored Gilroy 11-2 in the first five minutes of the game en route to a 19-10 first quarter lead.

The ‘Stangs surged back in the second quarter getting within four of Bellarmine on several occasions.

Out of the gate, Bellarmine outscored Gilroy 11-2 in the first five minutes of the game en route to a 19-10 first quarter lead.

But the ‘Stangs surged back in the second quarter. After Bellarmine’s Jonathan Beene drained his fourth three-pointer of the first half to give the Bells a 22-12 lead, Gilroy answered with six straight points. Conrad had a put back off a Chisolm miss, junior guard Michael Martinez hit a jumper and Chisolm scored on a driving layup to cut Bellarmine’s lead to 22-18.

In the third and fourth quarters, Ogden was displeased with Gilroy’s shot selection. Additionally, he said getting the ball to Chisolm and Conrad should have been more of a priority. Though the coach was happy with Conrad’s performance. The sophomore played organized basketball for the first time as a freshman on the JV squad last season.

“His upside is huge and he’ll improve every game,” Ogden said. “He’s an extremely hard worker.”

Conrad said the pace on varsity is much faster than on JV, but that playing on a club team over the summer against teams of 18-year-olds at a national tournament in Las Vegas helped prepare him for it.

“I came out a little nervous, but after warm-ups, I was ready to go,” the sophomore said.

Bellarmine senior center Kevin Schmidt led all scorers with 19 points and Beene finished with 16.
