Sheriff’s deputies arrest Michael Angelo Martinez, 31, of Morgan Hill, following a vehicle pursuit that ended in a firewood field along U.S. 101 and the end of Denio Avenue in unincorporated Gilroy. Deputy B. Cox spotted a black Mustang at Masten and No Name Uno that sped away when seeing the deputy. He attempted to stop the vehicle and pursuit began south on Monterey, to east Buena Vista, north on Radtke Avenue and then east into the dead-end at Denio and 101. Martinez attempted to lose the deputy in the field, then exited the vehicle and grabbed an ax, yelling for the officers to shoot him, according to Gilroy Police Department’s Sgt. John Sheedy. CHP and Sheriff’s officers held Martinez at gunpoint and upon the arrival of three GPD units, Sgt. Sheedy deployed a 37mm rubber pellet that struck Martinez, who dropped the ax and was taken into custody. Why he ran is under investigation, although he was arrested on suspicion of felony evading an officer and brandishing a deadly weapon.
