SALINAS – For head coach Jose Hernandez and the Gilroy High girls varsity soccer team it’s the little things that are important.
Beginning the year with a very tough preseason schedule, the Mustangs struggled to find cohesiveness, starting five freshman and others making their first prep starts of their careers.
However, with the growing pains have come improvements and after starting the year going scoreless through their first five contests, the Mustangs have netted nine goals in their last three outings, including a 5-0 win over North Salinas on Thursday in the Tri County Athletic League opener for both teams.
“We are a young team,” Hernandez said. “We still have some of the little things to fix, but I am happy with the progress.”
One of the freshman newcomers, Taylor Slattery, has made her presence felt over the last two games, scoring three times in that span, including two against the Vikings.
“We bumped her up to forward halfway through the preseason,” Hernandez said. “She can play anywhere. She has great speed and works hard.”
The Mustangs offensive outburst was also helped by tallies from junior Alex Maldonado (three goals this season), sophomore Savannah Silacci and junior captain Indra Garcia.
The Mustangs led 2-0 at the half before tacking on three more in the second.
