GILROY – The Brownell boys eighth grade basketball team started its season on a positive note last week, defeating the Herman Patriots from San Jose 45-32 at Brownell Middle School.
The Bruins started slowly on offense, ending the first quarter with a 7-6 lead built primarily on converting 5-of-8 free throws.
The offense, led by Trevor Hadnot (14 points, 6 steals), Hector Perez (12 points, 4 steals), and Evan Shapiro (8 points, 6 rebounds), found its groove in the second quarter and never let the visiting Patriots come close again.
The Bruins scored 12 points in the second quarter, 11 in the third, and 15 in the fourth, maintaining a fast-paced transition game that would take them to the free throw line 21 times in the game.
Other scorers included Zach Loo (4 points), Eddie Tinoco (a fade away 3-pointer), Kevin Costa (2) and Josh Delatorre (2).
The same intensity that led them to the charity stripe allowed the tenacious Bruins’ defense to hold Herman’s offense to a combined 10 points in the second and third quarters.
head coach Scott Aldridge was able to play his entire 14-player roster with the confidence born of a 30-16 fourth-quarter lead.
The Bruins face a week in which they play three games in a row. Valley Christian will play at Brownell Middle School today, Solorsano will visit on Wednesday and Brownell will travel to Bernal Middle School on Thursday.
All 8th grade games begin at 4:45 pm.
