GILROY – The Gilroy High boys tennis team served up its first win of the 2010 season, defeating Carmel 6-1 on Monday.
“For our first match of the season I was really pleased with how we played,” head coach John Langer wrote in an e-mail. “It’s difficult to get a true read on where our guys match up when we play a team like this that has injuries and players who couldn’t make it.”
The Mustangs took three of four singles matches and swept all three doubles games, although two came by default.
” Where we’ve really had success in the past is our doubles,” Langer wrote. “Four of our doubles players are returning from last year and one who played two years ago. We are hoping to have solid pairings again this year.”
Joseph Leong and Kevin Lee knocked off Mark Stilwell and Colin O’Grady 2-6, 6-1,10-6 in the No. 1-doubles match.
Vinh Vong, one of three returning singles players, handled Nick Garofono in straight sets, 6-1, 6-3 at No. 1-singles, while Ryan Azad and Victor Vong picked up wins at No. 3 and No. 4 singles, respectively.
The Mustangs next take the court Friday against Live Oak.
