Leif Dominguez (103) lost his opening bout 8-1 to George Torres of La Quinta to drop him down into the consolation bracket. He responded well in his second match, beating Nam Nguyen 6-1 to keep his tournament alive. His next opponent is Jalil Moore of Oakland Tech.
Rodney Balajadia (119) will also have some extra work to do to make the podium. The senior lost his initial match of the day, but dominated his first consolation opponent, 12-4
Willie Fox is following the same path as the previous two wrestlers, and after succumbing to Chris Calcagno of Clovis North by fall in the first period, he blew past Donovan Haplin of Casa Grande 11-0.
No. 1-ranked 125-pounder Jesse Delgado, No .1-ranked 160-pounder Dominic Kastl, Blake Kastl, Vicente Aboytes and Luis Barragan all made it through their initial matches and are awaiting their next assignment in the championship bracket.
While the other four wrestlers had just one match so far, Barragan did not have a first-round bye. Barragan has cruised through the field with 13-2 and 15-5 major decision victories. He will face Ory Elor of College Park who defeated Barragan in the finals late in the third period of this year’s Mid-Cals. Elor is currently ranked second in the state while Barragan is seventh.
