MORGAN HILL – The Gilroy High boys tennis team continued its successful non-league match play with its third victory in a row, this time blanking Sobrato 6-0 on Monday in Morgan Hill.
“This was a very defining match for our singles players,” head coach John Langer said.
The Mustangs are now 3-0 heading into their first Tri-County Athletic League match Thursday against Alvarez.
With the exception of No. 1-singles player Vinh Vong, who knocked off Tyler Pecsok 6-0, 6-2, the other three singles matches needed three sets to find winners.
“That shows a lot of determination,” Langer said. “When their opponents went flat in
the third, our guys stepped it up. They didn’t look tired at all.”
No. 2-singles player Oliver Drewry jumped ahead of Zach Thomas 1-set to love, but dropped the second set 4-6. Drewry recovered nicely with a 6-0 third-set win to get the point for the Mustangs.
Victor Vong rallied from a set down to defeat Jacob Mendeola in three. Though his match was stopped due to rain, Ryan Azad was ahead in the third set before play was halted.
The Mustangs doubles once again swept their way to three team points. The results follow below.
Langer added that the TCAL match against Alvarez on Thursday will be another good measuring stick for where the Mustangs are at in this early portion of the season.
“That will be the real test of where we are as a team,” Langer said.
