After being without a permanent president for nearly a year, Richard Spitler took the helm as the new president and CEO of Gilroy’s Economic Development Corporation last week.

Spitler, who most recently served as redevelopment agency director for the city of Healdsburg in Sonoma County, started work March 8, replacing interim director Richard Zahner.

“I can’t believe the energy level in Gilroy,” Spitler said during the City Council’s goal-setting session Friday. “People seem enthused and ready to tackle economic issues.”

Zahner had served as interim president since last May, after taking the place of former CEO Larry Cope, who served as EDC president for four years.
