GILROY – The first Tri-County Athletic League dual meet for the Gilroy High boys and girls track and field teams followed script, according to head coach Jeff Myers, as both squads secured wins over visiting Alvarez on Thursday in Gilroy.
The varsity girls, who were paced by double victories by senior Sarah UnaDia in the 100-and 300-meter hurdles, posted a 94-34 effort. The varsity boys, anchored by a strong day of competition by sprinter Ronnie Short and his 400- and 200-meter triumphs, beat the Eagles 78-58. Short crossed in times of 52. 29 in the 400, and 24.17 in the 200.
Short also runs the first leg of the Mustangs’ 4X100 relay team, a foursome that also includes David Guenther, Romeo Travis and Julius Travis which took first in a time of 44.47.
Chima Ikeme earned some valuable points in some of the field events, winning the discus with a personal-best throw of 130 feet. Ikeme, who also plays on the basketball team, placed second behind teammate Guenther in the triple jump. The two Mustangs recorded jumps of 39-5.75 and 39-2 to finish one-two.
“Overall we just had more talent then Alvarez,” Myers wrote in an e-mail.
Back on the girls side, Savannah Silacci, a standout sophomore cross country runner and soccer player, had a big day, taking second in the 1600, crossing in a time of 5:42.54. She then blistered the field in the 400-meter to claim first with a 1:04.14.
“That shows the great range Savanna possesses,” Myers wrote. “It was impressive.”
Sarina Sandoval and Angeline Kimbo went one-two in the shot put, throwing 32-10 feet and 31-9.5 feet, respectively.
The Mustangs face Salinas in a TCAL dual meet on Thursday in Salinas.
