SALINAS – Playing a game that was postponed last Friday due to the weather, the Gilroy High baseball team scored at least one run in five of the seven innings in a 12-5 win over Tri-County Athletic League opponent Salinas on Monday.

The victory moves the Mustangs to 3-0 in the TCAL in the early portion of the season.

Junior Eric Vegas, with his 3 for 3 day, was one of five Mustangs to produce multi-hit performances. Vegas also had three RBI in the win. Sophomore catcher Jordan Dexter went 2 for 5 with four RBI, and Bubu Garcia, Gabe Bonilla, and Brent Newton had two hits apiece.

A three-run top of the first for the Mustangs was quickly erased by a four-run bottom of the inning by the Cowboys. The Mustangs have scored at least two runs in the opening inning in their first three games of the year.

The Mustangs tied the game in the top of the second then proceeded to put some cushion between themselves and the host team, exploding for a five-spot in the fourth inning to make it 9-4.

Two more runs in the fifth and one in the sixth was enough room for relief pitcher Max Fishler to protect the lead. Fishler spelled starting pitcher Michael Hartman in the fourth inning. The two combined to toss six strikeouts.

Gilroy plays Alisal today in Gilroy, first pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m. The Mustangs beat the Trojans 14-3 on Saturday in the teams’ first matchup this season.
