GILROY – Five Gilroy High basketball players have been selected to play in the third annual Salinas Steinbeck Rotary Club North-South All-Star game on April 9 in Salinas, showcasing seniors in the tri-county area.

The GHS boys will be represented by Greg Hamik, Andrel Gaines and Dolapo Opere.

The Lady Mustangs’ Sovi Nou and Lindsey Foster will play in the girls’ game.

All Gilroy players will be on the North team.

The game is formatted with college rules, including two 20 minute halves.

Coaching the North boys is former Gilroy head coach Jeremy Dirks, who just announced his resignation two weeks ago. Dirks, named the Tri-County Athletic League’s co-Coach of the Year, led the Mustangs to the CCS Division I semifinals.

Hamik, the team’s leading point producer from start to finish with 16.4 points per game, also led the league in 3-pointers made with 54 and was named co-Most Outstanding Player.

Gaines, a first-team all-league honoree, led the Mustangs’ offense from the point guard position and was tops in the TCAL in assists, dishing out 108 dimes.

Opere made a living soaring above the rest under the hoop to bring down rebound after rebound for the Mustangs. His 255 boards was the largest sum in league this season.

Nou and Foster were pivotal members on the Lady Mustangs, who helped the team to a second place finish in the TCAL and a No. 2-seed in the CCS Division I playoffs.

Nou posted an 8.68 points per game average this season while Foster boasted a 9.44 average. Nou also led the team in 3-pointers with 22 converted shots from beyond the arc.

The all-star game is a charity event put on by the Steinbeck Rotary Club with proceeds going toward the Boys and Girls Club of Salinas, and the Sunrise House, which is a youth and family crisis center in Salinas.

Game time for the girls is 6 p.m. followed by the boys at about 7:30.

Both games are scheduled to take place inside the gym at the Boys and Girls Club.
