GILROY – The Gilroy High boys volleyball team faces its biggest challenge of the season when it squares off against Monterey in a clash of the top-two teams in the Tri-County Athletic League 6 p.m. Tuesday in Gilroy.

The Mustangs’ (10-8, 7-0 TCAL) league set-winning streak is still intact at 21 straight, yet the Toreadors, who are also 7-0 in league have dropped just one set in those victories, setting up a monster of a matchup.

Gilroy picked up two TCAL victories last week, (25-23, 25-12, 25-14) over Carmel and a (25-10, 25-8, 25-8) thumping of Alisal. However, the Mustangs stumbled against Mt. Madonna in a non-league matchup on Friday, losing 3-2.

The Toreadors (13-3, 7-0 TCAL), who had won the previous four league championships before being dethroned by San Benito last season, are coming off of a 2-2 showing at the Leland Charger Classic.

Gilroy swept the two-game series last season.

The Mustangs and Toreadors will play again to close out the season May 6 in Monterey.

The girls defeated the Eagles 96-65. Sophomore Michelle Shields and freshman Christina Collett each won two races, Bella Comin, Brittany Malick and Lauren Rhodes also had first place finishes.

Friday’s triumph followed a sweep of Alisal on March 19.
