Small earthquake occurs near Tres Pinos

A 3.9 magnitude earthquake sent a quick shake through Gilroy and
Morgan Hill at 5:51 p.m. Monday. The epicenter of the temblor was
27 miles south west of Gilroy in Aromas.
A 3.9 magnitude earthquake sent a quick shake through Gilroy and Morgan Hill at 5:51 p.m. Monday. The epicenter of the temblor was 27 miles south west of Morgan Hill in Aromas.

A dispatcher at the Gilroy Police Department said the department “definitely” felt the quake, but they had not received any calls to report the quake or about damages or possible injuries.

According to the United States Geological Survey’s website, the quake was 3.3 miles beneath the Earth’s surface and could be felt in Watsonville (about seven miles from the epicenter in Aromas), Hollister (14 miles) and as far away as San Jose (53 miles).

A USGS official said the quake likely happened along the San Andreas fault.
