Police arrested a 35-year-old man who allegedly attacked a debtor with a stick and knife.

Antonio Estrada was charged with one count of assault with a deadly weapon other than a firearm after he tried to run from police Saturday evening.

About 6:15 p.m., Gilroy police received a call of a fight in the alley near 146 Lewis St. Upon arriving in the area, officers found the 47-year-old male victim, a Gilroy resident, suffering from a nonlife threatening head injury.

Estrada initially took off on foot but stopped running after one officer displayed a Taser and ordered him to the ground, police said.

The victim, who was later transported to Saint Louise Regional Hospital for treatment, positively identified Estrada as his attacker.

The assault took place after the two men disagreed over a sum of money Estrada believes he is owed, police said. When the victim refused to pay, police said Estrada struck him over the head with a stick that had a large knife blade attached. Police later recovered the weapon used in the assault. The victim tried to defend himself with his belt buckle, police said.

Police booked Estrada into the Santa Clara County Jail.
