Sophomore Arianna Vasquez provided enough offense with her second-half goal to give the Christopher High girls varsity field hockey team a 1-0 decision over Santa Catalina on Tuesday.

Vasquez’s goal came early in the second half as she worked through a traffic jam in front of the cage.

The play was set up by junior Abigail Smith, who dribbled the ball into the circle, igniting the offensive push.

“We played well as a team, we talked well with each other and our passing was on,” head coach Stacey Myers said.

The Cougars are preparing for a showdown with first place North Salinas at CHS on Thursday.

The Vikings handed the Cougars (2-6-3) a 6-0 loss in the teams’ first meeting this season.

However, Myers expects the game to be much closer and a lower-scoring affair on the Cougars’ natural grass playing surface.

“We hope to continue connecting passes,” Myers said.

Game time is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
