PREP ROUNDUP: CHS, GHS girls golf teams participate in league championships

The Christopher High and Gilroy High girls varsity golf teams
hit the links at the Salinas Golf and Country Club on Monday for
the Tri-County Athletic League Championships.
Lauren Rhodes, Chelsea Hill, Francesca Comin and Michelle Shields all collected three goals in a Gilroy High girls water polo 18-5 victory over Notre Dame on Monday.

Because the Spirits did not have a Junior Varsity team, GHS head coach Sean LaGuardia had an opportunity to play his JV swimmers a majority of Monday’s contest.Francesca Filice and Brittany Salcido, up from the JV team, had one and three scores, respectively.

Goalie Devan Lauber stopped 11 shots in cage.

The Mustangs (14-1 overall, 7-0 league) also went 3-0 at the Lady Mat’s Invitational last weekend. GHS defeated Lincoln, 16-4, silenced

Lynbrook 18-5 and conquered ‘A’ league team Willow Glen 6-4 in the final game of the weekend stay.

Both the GHS boys and girls water polo teams have Senior Day on Wednesday beginning at 3:30 p.m.

GHS Field Hockey

The Gilroy High field hockey team played to a 1-1 tie with Saint Francis in Mount Hamilton Division play last Thursday night in Mountain View.

The Mustangs earned 16 short-corner opportunities, head coach Adam Gemar said, converting one of those chances seven minutes into the second half. Monica Marrazzo pushed the ball far post for a GHS 1-0 lead. Dani Hemeon was credited with the assist.

“We had more opportunities than them,” Gemar said. “They attacked us pretty well and were fast on defense.”

The Lancers countered toward the end of regulation, forcing sudden death overtime, which is played seven versus seven for seven minutes.

Neither team was able to break the deadlock.

The Mustangs were in action Monday afternoon in San Jose and beat Leigh 3-0 on goals by Tiana Huddlestun, Emily Costa and Alyssa Kroeger.
