Victory on Thursday guaranteed GHS girls spot in CCS
The Gilroy High girls varsity water polo team has qualified for the Central Coast Section playoffs for the second time in as many years.
An 11-6 win over Salinas on Thursday in the second round of the Tri-County Athletic League championships not only gave the Mustangs a spot in Saturday’s finals but also guaranteed them a postseason berth.
The top three teams out of the league championships advance.
GHS jumped out to a 4-0 lead on the Cowboys in Thursday’s game and increased its lead to 6-0 by the break.
The Mustangs’ defense did not allow a goal until the final period, carrying an 11-0 advantage into the fourth.
“The defense was awesome,” head coach Sean LaGuardia said. “If we can keep the same defensive mindset for Saturday, we will be in good shape.”
The Cowboys did find the cage six times in the fourth on Gilroy’s second-string lineup.
Seniors Lauren Rhodes and Chelsea Hill tallied three times each for GHS. Senior Leah Ailes and junior Michelle Shields had two goals apiece and junior Francesca Comin added one goal.
The Mustangs, who won this year’s regular-season league title with a flawless 9-0 record, lost in last season’s TCAL championship game to Salinas.
In their first trip to the CCS playoffs in program history last season, the Mustangs dropped a 14-8 decision to Gunn High School.
Game time for Saturday’s finals is 3:15 p.m. at Santa Catalina High School.
