New Hope Community Church will once again create winter survival kits to distribute to the homeless.

“Have you ever seen a homeless person on the streets, in front of the market or outside the mall with their hand outstretched?,” said organizer Denise Brown. “Was the compassion stirred within you to give them a helping hand but, at the same time, did not want to give them money for fear that they would buy drugs, alcohol or cigarettes? Did you ask yourself ‘Am I really helping them or contributing to their problems?’ Our group has wondered these same things.”

Last year, they were able to build 300 kits that were distributed at the Gilroy and Sunnyvale armories. Many were also given to local churches and businesses to further reach the needy people in the area.

Last year’s kits, which cost about $20 each to assemble, consisted of a Bible, six-pack of socks, beanie, waterproof gloves, toothbrush and toothpaste, soap, shampoo, tissues, lip balm, T-shirt, bottle of water and a bag of snacks.

Every dollar donated goes directly to help the homeless. There are no administration fees and no salaries to pay.
