Jiffy Lube turned back Hard Ninety 53-42 Monday at Solorsano Gymnasium in a showdown for first place between two unbeaten teams in the Men’s D Basketball League.
Jiffy Lube gained the upper hand in the Gilroy Community Services Department program by taking a 23-20 lead by intermission and holding onto the lead while improving to 3-0 in first-half competition.
Neil Garrett provided the difference by tossing in 23 points, keyed by an 8-for-8 effort at the free throw line. The 6-foot-7 center secured 12 of the 23 points Jiffy Lube scored in the first 20 minutes.
Cliff Dennett helped the Jiffy Lube cause with 12 points, including two three-point field goals in the second half. Kyle Sharp added nine points for the winners.
Hard Ninety, coming off victories by 20 and 12 points to reach 2-0 in league play, called on JT Tipton for 14 points to highlight the offense.
Frank Tomasetti and Destry Jones each helped the Hard Ninety cause with eight points. Josh Bleem netted seven points in the second half.
The Free Agents improved to 1-2 by outlasting the Sonics 67-60 in Monday’s nightcap.
Ryan Bassi led a quartet of Free Agent shooters in double figures with a 21-point showing. Dallas Jensen threaded three 3-pointers and 9-of-10 free throws toward a 20-point performance for the winners. Edgar Velazquez scored all of his 13 points in the second half as the Free Agents responded to a 27-25 deficit at the break. Simon Mohammad added 12 points to the winners’ effort.
Justin Nicholson powered to 21 points, Robert Mercado 11 and Jose Gallegos 10 for the Sonics.
The Men’s D League plays doubleheaders Mondays starting at 8:15pm. The six-team Men’s DD League has three games on Wednesdays starting at 7pm, also at Solorsano Gymnasium. Each team plays a six-game first half. The second half begins the first week of January.
